The painting in question turned out to be by Ivan Bilibin, a Russian artist who was painting around the turn of the last century, before the Russian revolution. He loved the Russian fairy tales and painted gorgeous scenes depicting traditional Russian villages, onion-domed churches, painted wooden halls, women in traditional dress, tsars and princes in embroidered robes, knights and soldiers and peasants and merchants, all depicted in landscapes of snowy steppes, deep dark forests, mountain meadows and rocky seashores.

More tomorrow.
