Don’t get me wrong, here. I’m not for a moment saying that working to correct systemic discrimination isn’t laudable and admirable and necessary. We need to eliminate gender discrimination (which as both Caroline and another anonymous commentator have pointed out, in many ways does men no favours either) in all its forms. But correcting thousands of years of systemic discrimination ain’t going to happen soon, and in the meantime women are still going to be discriminated against. So what to do in the meantime? Suck it up and throw all our efforts into opposing systemic discrimination? Or work to oppose systemic discrimination whilst at the same time doing our best to mitigate the effects of it on individual women and girls?
